So you want a Tarpaulin? Here's what you need to know.

To most people a tarp is a plastic sheet or covering that offers protection from the elements or covers household items from dust or paint whilst decorating or carrying out DIY work, but — speaking as a Tarpaulin Manufacturer and supplier — the term is actually a catchall for a huge and diverse range of products with varying applications. So when you say you want a tarpaulin what exactly are you looking for? 

Poly Tarps

Polyethylene (Poly) Tarps are what most think of when the word Tarp springs to mind. It's the kind of general purpose plastic sheeting you'll find in your local DIY store, normally supplied in a blue or white colour. Cheaper grades start at 50-70gsm (grams per square metre) and are ideal for decorating and DIY applications as well as temporary outdoor storage and camping ground sheets.

Medium 110gsm and heavy duty 180gsm grades of polyethylene tarpaulins are geared towards more commercial, heavier duty or longer term applications such as building work, agricultural storage or, in the case of our striped tarpaulins, for use as market stall covers. They're often used in conjunction with our range of Tarp Clips to secure the sheeting and prevent it from blowing in the wind.

PVC Tarps

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) Tarps generally have quite specific applications and are much more heavy duty; typically weighing in at around 550gsm (8-10 times heavier than cheap grade polyethylene tarps). They're usually made to order based on customer requirements. You'll typically find this material used as trailer covers, lorry sides, outdoor furniture covers or as made to measure market stall covers.

PVC material is available in a range of standard plain or striped colours and is typically supplied with a Fire Retardant (FR) rating to British Standard BS 7837:1996. We also offer a full colour digital printing service on this type of material and frequently supply custom printed market stall canopies, wraps and banners to the events industry.

Canvas Tarps

Canvas Tarpaulins are a traditional type of tarp covering made from a cotton duck material. They quite often incorporate a polyester yarn mesh known as Ripstop which strengthens the material and prevents rips from spreading. Owing to the natural fibres they're produced from, Canvas Tarps are generally breathable and will help reduce condensation.

The main drawback of this material however is that it can swell and shrink as it gets wet and dries out. Broadly speaking it's fallen out of mainstream use as cheaper man-made textiles such as Polyester, Polyethylene and PVC have become more prevalent. That's not to say it isn't used at all but its applications are generally very niche; think vintage car tops or traditional canvas tent coverings.
